You’re invited to an Open House at Foothill Horizons Outdoor School on Saturday,
May 14, 2011, from 10-2. Staff will offer tours and answer questions about the programs
provided at the outdoor school.
Parents are reminded that Foothill Horizons is a school site; alcohol, tobacco and pets
are not permitted. Parents must supervise their children while visiting.
Foothill Horizons
• is an outdoor school from September to June. Each year 5000 elementary school
children live at the school for 3-5 days. While here, the naturalist staff teaches them
about geology, ecology, discovery techniques, conservation, astronomy, and Me-wuk
culture. Students enjoy recreation on our playground, folk dancing in our Dining Hall,
singing and storytelling at evening campfire. Students who attend for 4 or 5 days also
visit Moaning Caverns and Calaveras Big Trees State Park on a field trip.
• is the site of an ROP class for high school students. One Saturday a month
throughout the school year, juniors and seniors spend the day at Foothill Horizons
learning about leadership and working with elementary school children. High school
students who participate in this training and serve for a week as a counselor at the
outdoor school receive 2 units of high school credit.
• is a summer camp for 7 weeks during the summer. Imagination, fun and friendship
are the hallmarks of our summer camp. This summer’s themes include Expedition
Impossible, Lord of the Rings, National Treasure, and Jumanji. The program is open to
graduating second through seventh graders; students graduating from 8
th – 11th gradesmay participate in our Counselor In Training program.
• is available for rental as a conference center. This could be the perfect setting for your
church retreat, family reunion, or wedding.
