Poetry Vocabulary and Spelling

 

rhyme : A rhyme is a repetition of similar sounds in two or more words and is most often used in poetry and songs.

rhythm: the pattern of long and short syllables in a poetic line. In modern poetry, some words receive greater vocal emphasis than others

alliteration: the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
"Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers."

idiom: expressions that have a meaning apart from the meanings of the individual words.
"It's raining cats and dogs."

onomatopoeia: words that imitate sounds. "Boom. Gurgle. Plink. Bark."

imagery: the formation of mental images, figures, or likenesses of things, or of such images collectively: the dim imagery of a dream. Also any writing the describes the five senses.

personification: assigning human qualities to non-human things or ideas

“The angry storm hit the boat”

metaphor: a figure of speech that compares two unlike things directly, without the use of like or as “A mighty fortress is our god.” “He is a monster on the skateboard”

simile: figures of speech that compares two unlike things, using the words like or as.  “she is like a rose.” "His feet were as big as boats."


tone: the overall feeling the poem creates. Mood, or tone, for example, can be playful, sad, lonely, angry or joyful.

tragedy: broadly defined, a literary and particularly a dramatic presentation of serious actions in which the chief character has a disastrous fate.

symbolism: using an object to represent an idea. A symbol means what it is and also something more. Lions often symbolize royalty. Flags symbolize a country

style: manner of expression; how a speaker or writer says what he says.

hyperbole: an expression of exaggeration. “This is the hardest homework ever created” “I almost died laughing.”

lyric: what poets write, the actual words used to form the framework of rhythm and meter.


pun: words with a humorous double meaning, a "play on words." "I nearly died laughing." "A dog not only has a fur coat but also pants."


mood: the overall feeling the poem creates. Mood, or tone, for example, can be playful, sad, lonely, angry or joyful. 


quatrain:
A quatrain is a stanza or poem consisting of four verses. Existing in various forms, the quatrain appears in poems from ancient civilizations including Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome and continues into the 21st century.

The Curfew tolls the knell of parting day,

The lowing herd wind slowly o'er the lea,

The plowman homeward plods his weary way,

And leaves the world to darkness and to me. 


sonnet: a lyric poem consisting of fourteen lines.


ballad: a relatively short narrative poem, written to be sung, with a simple and dramatic action. A poem that is a story.


genre: a literary species or form, e.g., tragedy, epic, comedy, novel, essay, biography, lyric poem.


lyric poetry: consists of a poem, such as a sonnet or an ode, that expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet. The term lyric is now commonly referred to as the words to a song. Lyric poetry does not tell a story which portrays characters and actions. The lyric poet addresses the reader directly, portraying his or her own feeling, state of mind, and perceptions.
